What the simulator does

The simulator is able to calculate and forecast the cost and energy impact of complex combinational change within the data centre and present the results in a number of different outputs:

Data Centre Efficiency

The simulator can calculate the expected efficiency across the entire operating range of a data centre and under any external climate conditions. The output is presented as an XML file that contains the data to be able to produce a surface plot of data centre efficiency (0-100%) against rated IT load (how full the data centre is) and external climate as the diagram below illustrates:

Data Centre Cost & Energy

The simulator is also capable of forecasting the cost and energy overall or for a subset of IT devices within a data centre across a period of time. Some of the variables that can change over time might be power cost, application workload, overall data centre capacity (if you are modular provisioning) and temperature. The simulator deals with all these variable and others across the entire simulation period and provides you with an XML output data file that can be used to build the following graphs:

Cost
Energy

Our thinking

  • As the industry grapples with metrics, which metric can be meaningful across the whole world and tell me about my data centre and IT efficiency? How about cost per delivered kWh?
